Track Season

by Wes Beneshek

Both boys and girls Lisbon track teams have started practice this year. They both started on Monday, February 13th. Both teams have a lot of talented athletes returning to their teams. Although Lisbon does not have a track, the teams still find ways to work very hard every day at practice. Whether that is running halls, on the football field, or even around town and into Mt. Vernon. Both teams have a lot of kids out this year. They are striving to reach the blue oval in Des Moines in May.

Lisbon Boys Track

The boys have had a lot of recent success. Both of the last two years they have gotten first as a team at the state tournament in Des Moines. The first title came by surprise, but the second one did not. The Lions knew they had a very good chance to win the championship last year. Which they did, winning by 12 total team points with 52. Jesup was a close second with 40. Their state championship t-shirts last year read, “Back to Back Without a Track, Ours is in Des Moines.” This year they will be going for their third straight title. There first meet is the Dickinson Relays at the Uni Dome in Cedar Falls on March 7, 2017.

Lisbon Girls Track

The girls, on the other hand, have had a lot of fast runners in the past couple years. Some of which go unnoticed because of the boys’ success. Although they haven’t won a title, there hard work will soon pay off. They have almost all of their returning state track runners returning this year and are looking to get more to the state meet. They have been working really hard so far this year, their hashtag on twitter is “#hardworkwins.” Hard work really does win and the girls are going to be very successful if they keep working hard. The girl’s first meet is on March 17, 2017, at the Tri-Rivers conference indoor meet at Cornell College. The boys will also attend that meet.
