Opinion: New Life or No Life at All

The crime rate in Albuquerque, New Mexico has increased dramatically.  A recent story came out about a father killing his wife, step daughter, then himself. Those involved were: husband Trinh Van, 45, wife Cam Thi To, 39, and Nhi Nguyen, 11. The three just recently moved to Albuquerque from a rural Vietnam because they wanted to have a clean slate and a new beginning. The state patrol began to question them because the daughter was still an illegal refugee. When the parents tried to enroll her in middle school this year when they had the most issues with authority. Trinh felt like the stress that was being put on the family was all his fault. The idea of moving to the United States came from the father, who had friends who lived in New Mexico. He himself suffered from deep depression and when his step daughter started to show signs of depression also, he took matters into his own hands and decided he would take all three of them out of their suffering. Trinh thought he was doing what was best for all of them, when in reality it just brought more sorrow to the family they had overseas in Vietnam.

In my opinion I think that just being out in public is beginning to get scarier. We often see stuff on the news about someone randomly doing something to someone else that is harmful. Looking and hearing on the news that someone was looked at wrong and took action. I just think that people are getting to the point where they just do not care about their actions anymore. I mean, what’s so bad about jail? You get three meals a day, get medication you need, get to write stories, draw, and get to go outside and walk around for at least 2 hours a day. If someone is living in rough conditions what would be so bad about having a place to sleep every night? People think that they can just do whatever they want and expect to not get punished, or when they do people start to disagree and then it is just the worst thing that ever happened. I personally think that if you’re going to make stupid decisions then you need to pay the consequences of the things that you do.

Suicide and murdering does not only affect the relatives, but also the whole community. The people closest to you could be the most dangerous people. In 2016 most murders are not random. They are from the people who were given your trust and betrayed it. When a tragedy like this happens, it scares the community. Parents become more protective and paranoid over their children, which can be both a good and bad thing. Parents that would not usually be as aware of their surrounding start to pay more attention but also so people take it too far, parents still have to let their children learn and grow even in bad areas. Having headline news over a bad topic also brings bad publicity to the city which hurts the incoming tourist percentage. when there are less tourist visiting the popular city of Albuquerque, it results in less income for the state to spend on education or necessary renovations around the city. The community is affected daily and fearful of their own lives when they hear that someone right down the street from them or in the same apartment was just murdered. Headlines are meant to bring fear when a bad situation results in a death. The community is continuously affected on both personal and local levels.

I think that we could use some more facilities so that people or families like this one could get some of the help that they would need. This is a very tragic event and we need to prevent more of these events before they become more and more common.
